Rockwell International Corp.: The company beat out a division of Martin Marietta Corp. in competition to develop a weapon to knock ballistic missiles out of space.
Rockwell’s Space Systems division in Downey will continue work on a $200-million contract along with Hughes Aircraft Co. Three contractors began the work in 1990 and the Army decided to drop one contractor to save on costs.
After further development of prototypes, the Army plans to narrow the field to one contractor.
