Agencies to Get Plan on Joint Airstrip Use

A committee investigating the feasibility of a joint military-civilian use of the airstrip at the Point Mugu Navy base has unanimously voted to send seven local government agencies a proposal outlining a governing authority that could run the project.
The committee voted to send the cities of Port Hueneme, Oxnard, Ventura, Camarillo, Thousand Oaks and the Oxnard Harbor District and county of Ventura a proposed joint powers agreement, which if accepted would detail how the airport would be regulated.
The cities, the harbor district and the county have until September to review and comment on the proposal.
At that time, the Point Mugu Airfield Investigative Committee will consider the agreement for adoption, according to Vern Hazen, a former Oxnard city manager and now a consultant to the committee.
Under the proposal, the seven governments would become equal partners in the running of the civilian side of the airport and would share in its costs and profits.
