Sports Stars Don’t Deserve Idolization

* The picture of 7-year-old Patrick Stebbins wondering (about) his dream of seeing the Angels ballgame was really heartbreaking (“Striking Back,” Aug. 10). But remember, kid, these players are not in this to please you. In spite of all the talk to the contrary, it’s the money that talks; the “fans” are just there to provide that cash.
You will not be out much if you find a real interest in your life--a real sport, not one that relies on a bouncing ball.
But then you may not have any heroes, such as great sportsmen like Pete Rose or that wonderful husband Steve Garvey or the one last month involved in the drug scandal.
Pat, don’t just write them a letter and pout. Do as I do: Never set foot in a ballpark, listen to or watch a game, or even glance at the sports section. Find another activity, one that is much more interesting than watching a bunch of grown men stand around, spit, scratch themselves and chase a little ball.
