TRUCKEE, Calif. — Four people were killed when a single-engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff Monday from the Truckee Tahoe Airport and burst into flames, authorities said.
“We know nothing as yet about the victims or the plane’s destination,” said Bill Chilcott, president of the airport board.
He said the Cessna 172-RG crashed at 10:15 a.m. about 700 feet from the end of the runway.
He declined to speculate on the cause of the crash, but said it sparked a small brush fire that was quickly put out by crews.
“The airport emergency teams were out there immediately, but there was no chance to save the people on board the plane,” Chilcott said.
Federal Aviation Administration investigators were en route to the scene to begin their investigation.
Skies were clear and winds were light when the plane went down, officials said.
