BEVERLY HILLS : Gorbachev Asks Worldwide Environmental ‘Perestroika’

Ex-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who heads an international ecological crusade, called for an international environmental “perestroika” on the second day of his two-day mission in the Los Angeles area.
“The role of the U.S. in the post-Cold War could be more important than its role was in the past,” the former head of the now-defunct Soviet Union said Tuesday at a Town Hall luncheon in Beverly Hills.
“This country has the potential to be a leader in a new world order,” he said through an interpreter. “The most important expression of that would be in the environment.”
Gorbachev founded Green Cross International in 1993, two years after he was deposed as Soviet leader. Global Green U.S.A., founded last year, will be an affiliate of the international group, Gorbachev said.
The American group will join Gorbachev in his campaign to get people in all countries to stop mistreating the earth, fix man-made disasters and reform ecological law, he said.
Gorbachev, flanked by his wife, Raisa, said that during the Cold War, the world was divided and “nobody had time for the environment.” Times have changed, he added.
