MONTEREY PARK : Council Replaces Official Accused of Racial Remarks
- Share via
The Monterey Park City Council decided Wednesday night not to reappoint library board member Kathleen Brzozowski, who made what critics say were racially tinged remarks about a fellow board member and threw a cup of water at a Chinese American activist.
Three of the council’s five members voted to replace Brzozowski with Joyce Mangrum, a former library worker and city employee. Brzozowski, 73, did not attend the selection meeting for the city’s boards.
“I think the majority of the council decided there needed to be a change. There needed to be someone who could focus on the important issues of the library,” Mayor Judy Chu said.
Members of the Monterey Park library board last month called on Brzozowski to apologize or resign after she threw the water toward a Chinese American political activist.
In July, Brzozowski said fellow board member Marina Tse “had a problem understanding English,” was not suited to be a board member and should take a “low position until she learned the language.”
