PREP EXTRA: SATURDAY FOOTBALL PULLOUT : CENTURY LEAGUE : Second-Quarter Effort Keys Villa Park Rout

Sean McMahon threw for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead Villa Park to a 42-8 victory over El Modena in a Century League game Friday night.

Playing in front of a homecoming crowd of 2,500 at El Modena, the Spartans (6-1, 1-1) blew out the Vanguards (2-5, 0-2) with a 28-point second quarter.

Villa Park scored 35 points in a seven-minute span between the end of the first quarter and the middle of the second.

The Spartans took a 7-0 lead on a 23-yard run by sophomore Franklin Haynes with 1 minute 5 seconds left in the first quarter.

Villa Park recovered an El Modena fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Vanguard 18-yard line. After a 17-yard pass from McMahon to Kris Fisher, McMahon scored from one yard out for a 14-0 lead.

The Spartans stopped El Modena on its next possession and got the ball back at the Vanguard 19 when Tony D’Amato recovered a bad snap on a punt.

Two plays later, D’Amato gave the Spartans a 21-0 lead when he scored on a five-yard run with 9:16 left in the first half.

Less than two minutes later, Villa Park made it 28-0 on a nine-yard pass from McMahon to Fisher.

Taylor Elliott recovered an El Modena fumble on the ensuing kickoff at the Vanguard five, and Dave Martinez went in on the next play for a 35-0 lead.

The Spartans made it 42-0 with 4:22 left in the third quarter when McMahon hit Matt Welch for an 18-yard score.

El Modena finally got on the board early in the fourth quarter when Jason Said scored on a one-yard run.

Villa Park’s running game was dominant. At one point late in the game, the Spartans were averaging more than 10 yards per carry.
