DANA POINT : City to Help Pay for San Juan Capistrano Sports Park

The City Council this week agreed to contribute $110,000 to an elaborate sports park to be built in neighboring San Juan Capistrano.
The $3.8-million park will include a community center, a swimming pool and fields for baseball, softball and soccer. It will be built next to Marco F. Forster Middle School at Camino del Avion and Del Obispo Street, at the city’s border with Dana Point.
Construction of the park is scheduled to begin in February.
Mayor Judy Curreri noted that although soccer fields are needed by Dana Point residents, some have in the past objected to their construction within the city limits.
“We really don’t have enough active parks in the city, nor do we have neighborhood park locations that could be converted to soccer fields without upsetting neighbors in those areas,” Curreri said. “Since we don’t have opportunities for soccer fields within the city limits, maybe we need to look at regional solutions.”
Councilman William L. Ossenmacher cast the dissenting vote.
“I think we have enough needs in Dana Point without exporting our tax dollars to San Juan,” Ossenmacher said.
