John Force of Yorba Linda recorded the first 300-m.p.h. funny car run at the Pomona Fairplex during Friday’s second round of qualifying for the 30th Winston Select Finals.
Force’s 301.40 m.p.h. in a Chevrolet Lumina shattered Jim Epler’s year-old record of 297.12, and also set an event elapsed-time record of 5.069 seconds.
In top fuel, Kenny Bernstein blistered the quarter-mile at a record 307.06 m.p.h., bettering Ed McCulloch’s mark of 304.05 set last February in the Winternationals. Bernstein’s 4.754 seconds was also a Winston Select record.
Darrell Alderman had an event-record 7.096-second run in his Dodge Avenger to pace the pro stock class.
