PORT HUENEME : City Council Opposes Smoking Initiative
- Share via
Joining forces with other cities in the county, the Port Hueneme City Council unanimously agreed to oppose Proposition 188, which would permit smoking in some public places where it is now prohibited.
Councilman Ken Hess said he opposed the proposition because it robs local governments of the ability to pass their own laws.
The proposition “is trying to usurp the authority of local governments,” Hess said. “They are telling us how to make rules in our own cities, and that is not right.”
Although smoking is not allowed in city-owned buildings in Port Hueneme, restaurants are allowed to have smoking areas.
If Proposition 188 is passed on the November ballot, it would nullify local laws on smoking and tobacco, and, among other things, allow smoking in office lounges.
