LONG BEACH : Carousel Staying Put for at Least a Year

An 88-year-old carousel will keep on spinning at Shoreline Village for at least another year before it is dismantled and shipped to its new home in San Francisco.
The carousel’s owner, the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, approved a one-year reprieve in the move from Long Beach for the hand-carved attraction, which was built in 1906 by renowned craftsman Charles Looff. In return, the Long Beach City Council agreed this week not to block the merry-go-round’s future move.
Shoreline Village leased the carousel from previous owner Marianne Stevens of Roswell, N.M., under a 10-year agreement that expired in the summer. The shopping center will now lease the carousel from the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency, which recently bought the attraction from Stevens for $1 million.
