PREP ROUNDUP : Calkins Sparks Santa Margarita Wrestlers

Santa Margarita’s Don Calkins overcame a four-point deficit to begin the final period and defeated Ryan Hughes, 16-12, at 171 pounds to clinch a 36-34 victory over Trabuco Hills in a nonleague wrestling dual meet Thursday at Santa Margarita High.
Ryan Cooper had put the Eagles (2-0) into contention one match earlier when he pinned his opponent at 160 pounds in 48 seconds.
In another nonleague wrestling meet:
Esperanza 53, Kennedy 5--The Aztecs (3-0) won 11 of 13 matches, including seven by pins.
In Sunset League field hockey:
Santiago 2, Huntington Beach 0--Freshman Amber Puskas scored the first goal and Ivone Monroy added the other for visiting Santiago (4-1-2). Camelia Rodriguez assisted on both goals.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Sunny Hills 3, Villa Park 1--Davis Lee, Scott Monson and Adam Beller had goals for Sunny Hills (3-0). Andy Vopp had two assists and Lee had one for the Lancers.
In the El Modena Vanguard Cup girls’ soccer tournament:
Capistrano Valley 5, Van Nuys Grant 3--Kelly Skeen scored the fourth and fifth goal in the second half for eighth-ranked Capistrano Valley (2-1).
El Modena 4, Sunny Hills 1--Nicole Terry and Kelsi Fisher each scored two goals and Kaylee Whitfield assisted all four goals for El Modena (3-1).
Esperanza 1, El Toro 1 (OT)--Despite nine shots on goal, fourth-ranked Esperanza was unable to break the tie. Kim Gallo scored for Esperanza (2-0-1), and Kelly Sawdon scored for El Toro (1-0-2).
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Ocean View 4, Mater Dei 2--Kim Engesser had two goals to lead unranked Ocean View over second-ranked Mater Dei. Krista Gaeta had two assists for the Seahawks (4-1), who also defeated sixth-ranked Edison earlier in the week.
Canyon 1, El Dorado 0--Teri Himes scored early in the first half and Catherine Williams made three saves for 10th-ranked Canyon (4-0). Kerri Anderson assisted on Himes’ goal. El Dorado is ranked seventh.
Brea-Olinda 2, Troy 0--Erin Wright scored two second-half goals for Brea-Olinda (3-0-2).
Connelly 4, Bolsa Grande 0--Gina Sanchez and Shana Randava each scored to lead Connelly (3-1). Sara Scheneck made six saves for Bolsa Grande (0-3-1).
