CARSON : Ice, Roller Rinks May Be Part of Development

Developers of the Golden Eagle site here have included ice and roller hockey rinks in the possible plans for the property.

The 76-acre site already has approval to develop retail shops including one large discount store and five or six other retail stores, said Allan Mackenzie of Carson Town Center Inc., owner and developer of the property.

One of the possible uses for the remainder of the property is an independent proposal by Ice Age Entertainment Inc. to develop roller and ice hockey rinks, Mackenzie said.

Community Development Director Pat Brown said the complex might include facilities for a semiprofessional ice hockey team along with a restaurant and bar.

Tuesday at 6:30 the City Council and Planning Commission will hold a joint session at City Hall to review the proposal.

The site gets its name from the refinery that once operated on the property. In addition, about 10 acres of the property was used as a landfill for commercial and residential waste. Since 1986, about 1.3 million cubic yards of contaminated soil from the property has been treated or disposed of in other landfills.

Mackenzie said ground-water remediation continues on the property, and that his company expects construction to begin on the retail center in June. Another part of the property may be developed for light industrial businesses over the next three or four years, he said.
