IRVINE — Junior welterweight Mike Walsh of La Mirada will put his 11-0-2 record on the line against Raymuno Gonzalez of Los Angeles in tonight’s featured undercard bout at the Irvine Marriott.
Walsh, trained by Jesse Reid, hasn’t fought in Irvine since September, 1993, when he knocked out Sergio Renteria of Dana Point in the first round.
Although he fought Fernando Rodriguez to a draw, Nov. 12 at the Olympic Auditorium, Walsh, 21, has knocked out nine of his 12 opponents. Tonight’s semi-main event against Gonzalez (8-4 with five knockouts) will be a six-round bout. Rodriguez, 22, has gone 10 rounds and eight rounds; Walsh has never gone past six.
In the main event, San Diego featherweight Ricardo Vargas (21-4-1) will meet Antonio Ramirez (12-10-1) of Pueblo, Mexico, in a 10-rounder. Vargas, ranked seventh by the International Boxing Federation, fought for the World Boxing Assn. title in 1993 and lost a 12-round decision to Jorge Julio.
The most intriguing fight should be 41-year-old John O’Brien of Costa Mesa against 36-year-old Elisea Torres of Los Angeles. Both fighters are making their pro debuts. O’Brien, a boxing and fitness trainer, was supposed to make his debut four months ago, but he broke his ribs during training.
The fights begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are priced at $35, $30 and $25.
