PATERSON, N.J. — Scuffles, rock throwing and scattered looting erupted Thursday after about 200 high school students protested in front of City Hall because a classmate had been shot and critically injured by police.
One student was critically injured when a police cruiser struck him as he ran across a street.
Authorities said the wounded youth was unarmed and was shot by a rookie police officer during a drug bust.
Mayor William Pascrell Jr. met with some protesters and promised a grand jury investigation.
