ARTESIA : City Threatens to Shut Popular Pepper’s Club

City officials are threatening to close a popular nightclub, Pepper’s restaurant, where several fights and other incidents have been reported in the past year.
Sheriff’s deputies have been called several times to the club at 17104 Pioneer Blvd. to break up fights and investigate reported assaults, thefts and robberies, documents show.
Officials said the club’s business permit has expired and that it has been providing music and dancing without an entertainment license. The city has told Pepper’s officials to apply for the necessary permits or close, said Deputy City Manager Maria Lloyd. The club failed to meet one deadline this week and was given 10 more days, she said.
Club officials did not return repeated phone calls.
At least one councilman, Timothy J. Kelemen, said he may oppose any application to renew Pepper’s entertainment license.
“I would prefer a family restaurant, and they’re far from a family restaurant,” he said.
