THEATER REVIEW : ‘Revue’ Has Camp but Lacks Sparks
- Share via
“Somethin’ Blue: A Barely Risque Revue,” at the Cinegrill of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, turns a couple dozen sexually suggestive show tunes into a campy shrine to musical double-entendre. But if you’re looking for real sparks, you came to the wrong cabaret.
The voices of the five ensemble members--Paul Bryant, Donna Cherry, Connie Jackson, Sharon McNight and George Solomon--don’t always mesh, and some of their ragged routines appear scantily rehearsed.
But many of the solo numbers are a big kick. Mae West look-alike McNight displays perfect timing with “I Never Do Anything Twice,” while Solomon soars with gag songs like “Phone Call” and “Como Te Gusta Mi Pinga.” An attempt to update Cole Porter’s “Let’s Do It” falls flat, but director Michael Chapman keeps things moving briskly, if not always arrestingly.
