Greenberg Staying at Long Beach

OAKLAND — Seth Greenberg, who accepted an extended contract from Long Beach State three weeks ago, signed the agreement Thursday and said he will not pursue the vacant basketball coaching job at Nevada Las Vegas.

Greenberg and Long Beach have been negotiating some of the contract’s language in the last few weeks. The deal was delayed by UNLV’s interest in Greenberg and Long Beach’s advancing to the NCAA tournament. Greenberg said he will advise UNLV Athletic Director Jim Weaver that he is no longer interested in the job.

“My decision to withdraw from the UNLV coaching situation had nothing to do with money,” Greenberg said. “I’m very comfortable with (Long Beach Athletic Director) Dave O’Brien, President (Robert) Maxson and our players.”

The five-year package will pay Greenberg about $175,000 a year, including money from a shoe deal, TV and radio work, summer camps and performance-based incentives. Long Beach will hire a secretary for the basketball program and has pledged to have the operation in its Pyramid offices by August.

Greenberg, among the highest-paid Big West Conference coaches, has a “roll over” provision in the contract after two years, essentially giving him an ongoing five-year deal.

O’Brien renegotiated Greenberg’s contract, which had three years remaining and paid about $150,000 per year, after USC Athletic Director Mike Garrett requested permission to interview Greenberg for the Trojan job.

As in the previous contract, the deal includes a buyout clause. Greenberg can end the contract by paying Long Beach about $50,000, according to an administration source.
