Housing for Disabled

I am very concerned about Congress’ plan to cut or eliminate the Department of Housing and Urban Development. I live in subsidized housing. I am a disabled woman with multiple sclerosis. My wheelchair is not what keeps me from working. It’s the fatigue common to people with multiple sclerosis. I just don’t have the energy to make a living.
But the Crippled Children’s Society builds apartments specially designed for people in wheelchairs. With HUD subsidizing my rent, I pay 30% of my income, minus a utility allowance, in rent. Without it I would be homeless. Without an address one can no longer receive Medicare or Medi-Cal. Unable to get my medications and catheters anymore, I would just have to live on the toilet. But homeless people are not welcome in anyone’s toilet. That’s what this country needs: more disabled, homeless people!
