New York City has banned smoking in restaurants that seat more than 35 people, under terms of a new law that went into effect last week. (About 4,000 of the city’s 15,000 restaurants have fewer than 35 seats, according to the New York Restaurant Assn.) The law also bans smoking or tightens restrictions at recreational facilities, and in movie theaters and office buildings.
Driving Lesson, English-Style

Philadelphia Steps Back in Time
Beginning this weekend, “Historic Philadelphia” kicks off its first full season of tours, arts and crafts demonstrations and musical theater. Throughout the district, town criers will greet visitors and dispense free maps and information on Independence National Historical Park, Old City, Society Hill, Penn’s Landing and South Street. Activities will be staged on weekends through May 21 and then every day from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend.
