LOS ANGELES : Salvadoran Immigrants Urged to Seek Asylum
- Share via
Community groups Thursday urged tens of thousands of El Salvadoran immigrants residing in the Los Angeles area to file prompt applications for political asylum if they fear persecution back in their homeland. Many may otherwise face deportation after years in the United States.
“We are very concerned, because if they leave this until the last minute they’ll lose the opportunity,” said Carlos H. Vaquerano of the Central American Resource Center.
At risk, Vaquerano said, are up to 80,000 Salvadorans affected by the Clinton Administration’s decision last year not to extend their temporary legal status, which expires Sept. 30. Most probably would qualify for continued legal protection if they file for political asylum by June 30, he said.
Those seeking assistance may contact the center at (213) 483-6868.
