Track and field
Bethel, who lost only one event--the high jump--in her first high school dual-meet season, swept through the South Coast League finals. She won the high jump in 5 feet 2 1/4, the long jump in 18-0 and her specialty, the 100-meter hurdles. Her hurdle time was a wind-aided 14.34 seconds, the county’s fastest under any conditions. The county record is 14.44. Bethel also ran the leadoff leg of the 400 relay team, which won in 49.52.
Softball
Angie Fancuberta
* Fullerton, junior. Extended her scoreless streak to 44 innings with a 1-0 four-hitter over La Habra and a 13-0 victory over Sunny Hills as the Indians moved into a first-place tie.
Kathy Ponce
* Ocean View, senior. Pitched a four-hitter and hit a home run in a 3-0 victory over Irvine, went three for three with a homer in a 9-2 victory over Tustin and pitched a two-hitter in a 6-0 victory over Tustin.
Swimming
Melissa Schutz
* Newport Harbor, senior. Set the Sea View League 50-yard freestyle record, winning in 24.12 to edge Irvine’s Wendy O’Brien. Finished third in the 100 freestyle.
Track and field
Julie Steele
* Troy, sophomore. Won the 100 meters in 12.76, the high jump in 4 feet 11, the long jump (17-5) and triple jump (35-6 1/4) at the Freeway League finals.
