Mayors, Chiefs Back Gun Laws

WASHINGTON — A group of 111 mayors and police chiefs urged Congress on Tuesday not to repeal gun-control laws this session.
“In the wake of the tragic bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City and the apparent motivation behind it, we urge that the 104th Congress not consider any legislation that would weaken the nation’s gun-control laws,” the U.S. Conference of Mayors said in a letter to all members of Congress.
Republicans who control Congress had planned to try to repeal the ban on 19 types of assault weapons in last year’s crime bill, but they have postponed action because of the bombing.
