Anti-Crime Program Uniting Merchants

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The city is starting a Business Watch Program to help merchants combat fraud, vandalism and other problems.
Business owners are invited to attend an orientation meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at City Hall.
Under the free program, the city’s police services department will provide businesses a window decal, crime prevention survey, a quarterly newsletter and forms for merchants to fill out if they spot a suspicious person or vehicle.
Yomar Cleary, the city’s director of volunteer services, said that officials are also looking at the possibility of faxing merchants to alert them of scams in Orange County immediately.
“Right now merchants are looking out for each other, but this program helps them get more organized,” Cleary said.
