New Pentium-Based Notebooks Due: Several personal computer makers will begin selling notebook models today based on a new version of Intel Corp.’s Pentium chip that uses less power. They are are the first of a number of machines expected from the major PC companies as the transition from 486 to Pentium-class chips, already well underway in desktop computers, gains speed with portable models. Toshiba Corp., the leading seller of portable PCs, will become the first to offer a Pentium-based sub-notebook. Dell Computer Corp. and AST Research Inc. will follow.
