Politicians have long exchanged tips on speechifying and deal-making, but state Sen. Robert G. Beverly got some useful advice of a different sort from a fellow GOP official.
U.S. Rep. Steve Horn (R-Long Beach) underwent surgery for prostate cancer last year and urged all men older than 50 to get yearly screening with a special blood test called prostate-specific antigen screening. Beverly, age 70, took note--and took the test.
When cancer was found, he had successful surgery June 5 at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance.
The five-term state senator, who represents portions of the South Bay and Southeast Los Angeles County, is recuperating at his Long Beach home and hopes to return to Sacramento late next week . . .
