HUNTINGTON BEACH : Hearing Set on School Property

Proposals for using 11 acres of land at Golden West Street and Warner Avenue owned by the Huntington Beach Union High School District will be the topic of a special meeting of the district’s trustees at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Either a commercial or residential development on the land could bring in millions of dollars, officials said, for the cash-strapped school district that governs all public high schools in Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Westminster.
A district spokeswoman said the session is likely to last all day as the board hears proposals from six developers.
Those presentations will be followed by a closed session to consider awarding a contract to develop the property.
The tract under consideration is behind Ocean View High School.
The district has long proposed commercial or residential development of the land to bring in revenue.
Assistant Supt. Patricia Koch said that the district in 1993 awarded a developer a long-term lease to build apartments on the site but agreed to cancel the deal earlier this year after the developer encountered financing problems.
“The proposals we’ll be hearing on Saturday are from commercial and residential developers,” Koch said.
“Some of the proposals are for lease, some are for joint venture, and some are for sale” of the 11 acres.
The special meeting at district headquarters, 10251 Yorktown Ave., will include a public comment session.
