Wildlife officials are trying to determine why about 150 catfish washed ashore recently at one of the three lakes in Long Beach’s El Dorado Park.
The lakes near Studebaker Road, popular fishing spots, are regularly stocked with catfish.
The fish died last weekend in the Area 2 lake, the only lake north of Spring Street, officials said. The lake remains open to anglers.
“It’s hard to know why the fish died,” said Long Beach official Phil Hester. “We turn the water over regularly and there’s good visibility.”
Nearly 900 pounds of catfish were dumped into the three lakes Sept. 12. Hester speculated that the deaths could have been caused by changes in water temperature that occur each fall or fluctuating oxygen levels
