Two surfers convicted of beating another surfer in the waves during a 1994 surfing championship in Malibu were ordered by a judge this week to each perform 300 hours of community service.
Lance Hookano, 34, of Honolulu and Joseph David Tudor, 44, of San Diego also were placed on three years’ informal probation Tuesday.
Hookano and Tudor were convicted in August of misdemeanor assault for the Sept. 27, 1994, beating of amateur wave-rider Richard Ernsdorf during the Oxbow Longboard World Championships. Ernsdorf, 44, suffered a concussion, a dislocated shoulder and facial cuts in the attack at Surfrider Beach.
