NATION IN BRIEF : VIRGINIA : Court Will Rule on VMI All-Male Policy

The U.S. Supreme Court, agreeing to consider whether states may offer “separate and unequal” educational opportunities to women, said that it will rule on the constitutionality of the men-only policy at the Virginia Military Institute. The case, to be heard in January, could yield a broad ruling on gender discrimination. VMI and The Citadel in South Carolina are the nation’s only all-male public colleges. The Citadel recently admitted a woman, Shannon Faulkner, after a lengthy court battle, but she withdrew after a few days.
