Water Main Bursts in Sherman Oaks

SHERMAN OAKS — An underground water main burst Friday afternoon on Buffalo Avenue off Riverside Drive, sending water spewing into the residential street and leaving up to 18 households without water, Department of Water and Power officials said.
Engineers were set to work through the night to restore service to the homes by morning, DWP spokeswoman Mindy Berman said. The six-inch-diameter pipe burst about 5 p.m., sending the street buckling upward and forcing closure of the dead-end block, she said.
About 6:30 p.m., the water was shut off by engineers, Berman said. The cause of the pipe’s rupture was unknown, but Berman noted that pipes sometimes break because of age.
