PREP EXTRA / ORANGE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL : SCORECARD: COUNTY HIGHLIGHTS FROM WEEK 5

GOING A LONG WAY FOR A VICTORY
It was a long trip to UC Riverside Friday for Los Alamitos, not only in distance but also in time.
The Griffins left school around 3:30 p.m. with the intention of reaching Riverside by 5, thus giving them some time to relax before the game. But two traffic accidents so snarled the Riverside Freeway that Los Alamitos did not reach the campus stadium until 6:05.
It left Coach John Barnes in a sour pregame mood. “Instead of relaxing, we now have to rush around, and I don’t think it puts the kids in a good mental state,” he said.
Los Alamitos remained undefeated, beating Riverside Poly, 28-14, but the final score was probably closer than Barnes would have liked.
MIGHTY BIG ‘D’
Bloomington Christian’s defense rose to the occasion again in a 42-0 victory over Victory League rival Capistrano Valley Christian.
Not only did the Ravens shut down the county’s leading-rusher, Bryant Wolfsberger, holding him to minus-one yard, they also shut out their opponents for the fourth week in a row.
Wolfsberger had 759 yards entering Friday’s game.
ON THE RECORD
“In this job, I’ve said that I can deal with the parents and all that other stuff . . . but I hate the injury part of the game. I just feel real bad. I feel for the kid.”
--Bruce Rollinson, Mater Dei coach, after watching junior wide receiver Rod Perry suffer a knee injury in a 38-0 victory over Ramona.
LOOKING AHEAD
Garden Grove League teams got their usual jump start on league play, but the remainder of the county’s teams begin their league games next week.
An interesting Century League matchup--Orange against Santa Ana Valley Thursday at Santa Ana Stadium. Veteran Coach Dick Hill’s Panthers are 5-0 on the field, but only 3-2 in the standings after forfeiting victories for using an ineligible player. Santa Ana Valley (4-1), one of Hill’s former stomping grounds, is revitalized by new helmets and a new attitude instilled by Coach Scott Orloff.
Top-ranked Los Alamitos meets Edison Thursday in a Sunset League game at Veterans Stadium in Long Beach. Remember last year’s nail-biter at Orange Coast?
The Empire League race could be decided in the first week of league play when El Dorado plays host to Kennedy Friday at Valencia High.
GOOD NEWS, BAD NEWS
Loara Coach John deFries was on hand Friday to see his son, Greg, score a two-yard touchdown at Glover Stadium.
That was the good news.
The bad news for John deFries is that Greg is a junior at El Modena, and his third-quarter touchdown proved to be the winning points in the Vanguards’ 27-16 victory over Loara.
EQUAL RIGHTS
It’s not often you’ll find a girl on a varsity football squad.
But junior Emily Quilter, who plays wide receiver at Laguna Beach, made it into Friday’s game for one play against El Centro Southwest.
Quilter didn’t catch a pass, but threw a block and ripped off a thumbnail in the process.
The Artists won, 28-0.
A TOUCH OF CLASS
Southern California Christian has been working hard add a little color to its home field in Orange.
Last week, athletic personnel painted yard-line markers on the field. This week, a giant “SC” in red and gold paint made its debut.
