Transamerica Earnings Rise 49%: Pushed by record operating earnings from its Los Angeles-based life insurance operations, Transamerica Corp. of San Francisco reported a third-quarter profit of $147 million, or $2.08 a share, compared to earnings of $105 million, or $1.40 a share, a year ago. This year’s results included $36 million in investment gains and other special items. Life insurance operations logged quarterly operating income of $78.6 million. Even excluding $7.3 million worth of one-time gains, that was a 10% improvement over the life insurance results in the year-ago period.
