Soccer Teams Meet in Special Olympics

Teams competing in the first Ventura County Special Olympics Soccer Tournament Saturday will demonstrate skills they learned during a soccer clinic this summer.
Two teams from Thousand Oaks and one from Ventura will take on teams from Torrance and Santa Barbara.
The local teams have been practicing for several weeks following a soccer clinic put on by Cal Lutheran University soccer players in June. Bob Martin, assistant director of Ventura County Special Olympics, said the sport is especially popular with the younger athletes.
“A lot of their peers play AYSO soccer,” Martin said. “This gives them a chance to demonstrate their skills.”
The tournament runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Peppertree Park, 3720 Old Conejo Road, in Newbury Park.
