Five teen-agers were injured Thursday afternoon when the car in which they were riding collided with a truck making a U-turn on Portola Parkway near Irvine, California Highway Patrol officers said.
The teen-agers, of San Juan Capistrano, Irvine, Trabuco Canyon and Lake Forest, were transported to three hospitals. At least one needed surgery and was listed in stable condition, according to a CHP spokeswoman. Four others received injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, authorities said.
The teen-agers’ car was traveling north at about 65 m.p.h. in the fast lane of Portola Parkway, a CHP spokeswoman said. Near Sand Canyon Avenue, their car struck the right rear corner of a truck driven by a 42-year-old Alta Loma man, investigators said. The man was trying to make a U-turn from the right shoulder of the parkway, police said.
