BUENA PARK — After Adam Rodriguez of Sunny Hills recovered a fumble, Pomona Ganesha’s fourth turnover of the first half, a Sunny Hills fan yelled, “Bring on Lompoc.”
With Sunny Hills (6-4-1) leading by 17 points in the second quarter, it seemed easy for the fan to say that.
Sunny Hills went on to beat Ganesha, 24-14, Friday night at Buena Park High in the opening round of the Southern Section Division VII playoffs. And Sunny Hills advances to meet Lompoc, which defeated Rancho Alamitos, 31-14.
The Lancers scored 17 points in the first quarter on three Giants’ mistakes.
Ryan Driessen recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff, and four plays later Chris Velotta scored on a 16-yard run.
Sean Ellefson intercepted a pass by Ganesha’s Joel Porres on the first play after the kickoff. Two plays later, Robert Oliver scored from four yards out to give Sunny Hills a 14-0 lead.
Oliver led Sunny Hills with 129 yards rushing in 33 carries. Velotta finished with 102 yards in 15 carries.
Guy Porter recovered a Ganesha fumble and 14 plays later, Todd Weaver kicked a 32-yard field goal to increase the lead to 17-0.
