LOMPOC — Even though the fog didn’t blanket Huyck Stadium until the third quarter of Lompoc’s 31-14 Southern Section Division VII playoff victory over Rancho Alamitos on Friday night, the Braves’ offense had been in a fog the entire first half.
The Braves (10-1), who averaged 21.4 first-half points during the regular season, led only, 10-7, at halftime. The Vaqueros’ second-quarter touchdown marked the first time Lompoc trailed in a game since September. Lompoc advances to play Sunny Hills.
The Braves’ first two possessions ended inside the Rancho Alamitos 20-yard line. But Ray Hirzel kicked a 32-yard field goal late in the first half.
The Vaqueros (4-6-1) put together a 14-play, 73-yard drive capped by a Leo Kosi five-yard touchdown run.
Dennis Gibbs put Lompoc ahead for good midway through the second quarter on a 64-yard run.
Gibbs topped the 200-yard mark with his second carry of the third quarter, and put the Braves ahead, 17-7, with a touchdown.
