In the consolation round of the Cal Poly Pomona men’s basketball tournament:
Cal Poly Pomona 68, Concordia 65--Cal Poly Pomona’s John Miller hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to win it. Jeff Putnam and Tarik James scored 17 points each for Concordia (1-1).
In Mountain Pacific Sports Federation water polo:
Pepperdine 13, Long Beach State 9--Alan Herrmann, Larry Felix and Sean Lane each scored three goals to lead Pepperdine (13-8). Kip Parsons had four goals for Long Beach State (9-14).
In nonconference water polo:
UC Irvine 15, UC Santa Barbara 6--The fourth-ranked Anteaters scored 10 second-half goals to break open a 5-5 score. Sophomore Ryan Bailey scored four goals and Robert Allaire added three for UC Irvine (15-6).
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
UC Irvine 3, Utah State 1--Popi Edwards had 17 kills to lead UC Irvine (7-19, 4-14) past Utah State, 15-6, 15-10, 9-15, 15-12. Utah State remains winless at 0-30, 0-18 in league.
In Pacific 10 Conference wrestling:
Cal State Bakersfield 28, Cal State Fullerton 10--Cal State Bakersfield broke a 10-10 tie by winning the final four matches in the season-opening dual meet.
Orlando de Castroverde (118), Darryl Christian (142) and Carl Sharamitaro won decisions for Cal State Fullerton.
In the NAIA men’s cross-country championships:
SCC finishes 25th--Southern California College’s men’s team finished 25th in a 33-team field competing at the NAIA cross-country national championships at Wisconsin Parkside in Kenosha.
Jason Schaefer was the Vanguards’ top finisher, placing 103rd on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 27:22.
Nikee Pool finished 42nd in the women’s five-kilometer race, competing as an individual.
