NEWPORT BEACH : Council Seeks to Raise Contributions Limit

Acknowledging the rising costs of running for office, the City Council will consider raising the city’s campaign-contribution limit to $500.
With election year approaching, some council members have questioned whether individual contributions of $200, the current limit, are realistic.
At a council meeting last month, Councilwoman Norma Glover proposed amending the city’s campaign contributions guidelines to reflect the actual cost of seeking local office.
To make local campaign policy consistent with state and federal guidelines, Mayor John Hedges and Councilman John C. Cox Jr. proposed setting the limit at $700. Councilman Thomas Edwards proposed $500. The council will review the matter Monday, its last meeting of the year.
In other action, the City Council will make appointments to advisory committees, including panels that make recommendations about the airport; public safety, bikes and trails; environmental quality; and harbor quality.
The City Council meets at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 3300 Newport Blvd.
