Three car burglary suspects eluded police after a high-speed car chase through dense fog, a brief shootout and a search by SWAT and K-9 teams through Centinela Park in Inglewood early Monday morning.
Inglewood Police Sgt. Bill Thompson said that a patrol car was responding to a report of a car being tampered with on Manchester Terrace when officers spotted a white Monte Carlo in the middle of the street.
The car sped away and after a short pursuit in heavy fog, crashed into a light pole at Prairie Avenue and Regent Street.
Two men ran from the car. Then the driver backed into the police car and headed northbound on Prairie. Speeding along streets with poor visibility, he crashed again at Florence Avenue, and ran into Centinela Park after a short exchange of gunfire with two officers.
SWAT and K-9 teams from Inglewood and Santa Monica then searched the park in vain. Police recovered from the car an AK-47 assault rifle and a revolver.
