A 22-month-old Bassett girl who nearly drowned after falling into a pool at her home was in critical condition Wednesday at Memorial Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach, hospital officials said.
Lorena de Anda Moreno was semi-conscious and breathing through a life-support system, said Lori Brandt, a hospital spokeswoman.
“Her prognosis is guarded,” Brandt said. “Doctors think she is going to live, but they don’t know about the neurological damage.”
On Tuesday Lorena fell into the family’s unfenced pool, which was empty except for a 1 1/2-foot-deep puddle of rainwater in the deep end, said Sheriff’s Deputy Marc Verlich.
Verlich and his partner, Tim Jimenez, were patrolling near the child’s home in the 100 block of South Collwood Avenue when her parents made a 911 call, Verlich said.
The toddler was in full cardiac arrest when the deputies arrived and began administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Verlich said.
