King update--Trying to boost the power play, the Kings acquired 23-year-old defenseman John Slaney on Thursday from Colorado in exchange for a sixth-round draft choice. Slaney has three assists in seven games this season. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Slaney practiced with the Kings on Thursday in Edmonton. The Kings have lost seven consecutive games on the road. Left wing Dimitri Khristich, who has sat out two games because of a concussion, may return. The tentative plan is to start goalie Byron Dafoe tonight and Kelly Hrudey on Sunday against the Mighty Ducks.
Oiler update--Edmonton was hurt when defenseman Jiri Slegr suffered a knee injury in Wednesday’s 3-2 victory over Philadelphia. He was scheduled to have knee surgery and will be out six to eight weeks. The Oilers’ top line is left wing Zdeno Ciger, center Doug Weight and rookie right wing Miroslav Satan. Weight has 12 goals and 48 points in 37 games. The victory over the Flyers started a stretch in which the Oilers play 15 of 18 games at home.
