The Vancouver Canucks, led by Russ Courtnall, came back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat the Winnipeg Jets, 5-4, at Vancouver on Tuesday.
Courtnall, who had earlier scored his 14th goal, added the game-winner with 5:58 to play. Courtnall started the comeback with a short-handed goal.
Trevor Linden had a goal and two assists and Alexander Mogilny added two assists for the Canucks, who are 4-1-2 in their last seven games.
The Jets had a chance to tie with a two-man advantage in the final 31 seconds, but they couldn’t produce a quality scoring chance. The loss ended a two-game winning streak for Winnipeg.
Vancouver fired 32 shots at Jet goalie Nikolai Khabibulin, including a 13-2 edge in the last period.
Washington 3, Calgary 2--Kelly Miller and Joe Juneau scored in the opening 3:12 at Landover, Md., to help the Washington Capitals stretch their unbeaten streak to six games. Michal Pivonka also scored for the Capitals, who have won four in a row at home and are 4-0-2 overall since Jan. 31.
“The turning point came when the referee dropped the puck for the opening faceoff,” Calgary’s Theo Fleury said. “We just didn’t come out of the gate very good.”
Down, 3-1, heading into the final period, the Flames outshot Washington, 12-4, and got a power-play goal from Fleury with 10:47 left.
But Calgary managed only four shots after that and fell to 1-21-2 when trailing after two periods.
St. Louis 3, Tampa Bay 2--At St. Petersburg, Fla., Brett Hull scored his 32nd goal of the season in a game in which the Blues scored all of their goals in the first seven minutes.
It was the fourth consecutive home loss for Tampa Bay.
Blues goaltender Grant Fuhr, making his 56th consecutive start, only needed to stop 18 shots to improve to 23-20-10.
Tampa Bay goaltender Daren Puppa, returning after sitting out a game because of back spasms, made 36 saves but fell to 16-11-5.
NHL Notes
Florida Panther center Brian Skrudland was suspended for a game without pay and fined $1,000 for high-sticking the Detroit Red Wings’ Vyacheslav Kozlov last week. Skrudland has already served the suspension, sitting out Sunday’s game.
