Nation IN BRIEF : NEW YORK : Giuliani Kills Tours of Huge Landfill

What could have been New York City’s most unsavory tourist attraction--guided tours of the world’s largest garbage dump--was angrily scrapped by the city’s mayor. Plans to run public tours of the Fresh Kills landfill were “insensitive and foolish,” Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said in announcing they would be canceled. Sanitation Department officials had proposed the tours on the theory that the public could learn just how much waste is created and become more avid supporters of recycling. The dump--3,000 acres covered with malodorous mountains of garbage with untold numbers of gulls and an occasional bald eagle overhead--takes in 14,000 tons of garbage every day by truck and barge.
