BUJUMBURA, Burundi — Hutu rebels killed at least six people in their latest attacks in southern and central Burundi, aid and security sources said Friday.
At least five people were killed and an unknown number wounded in an overnight attack near the central town of Gitega, and at least one person was killed Friday in the southern town of Makamba, where the market was set ablaze.
Rebels also attacked Makamba on Wednesday, killing 12 civilians and wounding at least two people in 50 minutes.
The Red Cross said fighting between Burundi’s army and rebel militias has forced at least 5,000 people to flee their homes in southern Burundi in the past week.
