Hit Is Among Best in Life of Riley

Brian Riley’s eighth-inning single drove in Eddie Loya from third base to give host Buena High a 14-13 victory over Bishop Amat in the first day of the round-robin Buena Ventura tournament.
Bishop Amat tied the score, 13-13, with a grand slam in the top of the seventh. Buena’s Matt Foster had three hits, drove in six runs and scored three times. Teammate Rudy De la O had three hits and three runs batted in.
Buena starter Darryl Mundy allowed 11 hits and four runs in five innings. David Arroyo (2-3) closed the game with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief.
The teams combined for 31 hits.
In other Buena Ventura games:
Santa Paula 6, Ventura 3--Willie Zavala (1-0), making his first start of the season, limited Ventura to three hits and three earned runs over 4 1/3 innings. Zavala’s four previous appearences had been relief stints of fewer than two innings.
Clayton Alamillo had two hits and two RBIs and Nick Rericha hit a two-run home run in the fifth for Santa Paula (9-0-1). Corey Kniss (1-4) took the loss for Ventura (5-9).
Camarillo 9, Oxnard 0--Joe Borchard started the rout with a three-run triple in the second inning as the Scorpions (13-1) trounced the Yellowjackets (1-10) at Camarillo.
BABE HERMAN TOURNAMENT
In first-round games:
Canyon 4, Fremont 3--Doug Cope had two hits and stole three bases for Canyon (2-10) at Glendale High.
St. Francis 7, Monroe 3--Mike Velazquez had three hits, including a two-run home run, for St. Francis (5-5-1) at Hoover.
San Bernardino Cajon 13, Burbank 3--The Cowboys (9-3) scored nine runs in the top of the seventh in a game played at Hoover.
Freddy Sanchez smashed a three-run home run in the first inning for Burbank (4-7).
Upland 6, Crescenta Valley 1--A trio of Falcon pitchers gave up only two hits but walked seven and hit two as Crescenta Valley (6-6) lost at Stengel Field.
Hoover 3, Verdugo Hills 1--Mark Hull hit a double and a triple for Hoover (9-4) at Stengel Field.
Jeff Martin had two hits, including a double, for Verdugo Hills (5-4).
BIRMINGHAM TOURNAMENT
Calabasas 15, Village Christian 5--The Coyotes (9-1-2) stole 11 bases en route to the victory in pool play at Calabasas.
Brian Fatur led the Calabasas running attack, walking four times and stealing four bases, including a home. Tanner Trosper stole three bases and Matt Jackson (2-0) picked up the victory with three innings of three-hit relief.
Adam Davey had two hits, including a two-run home run, and four RBIs. Trosper and Josh Coleman each had two hits and two RBIs.
In other pool-play games:
El Camino Real 12, Palisades 2--Craig Hennes and Jared Maiden each had three RBIs for the Conquistadores (8-6) at El Camino Real.
Mike Conn (1-3) pitched five innings to earn the victory.
Grant 5, Nordhoff 4--Julio Cortez doubled in Scott Ward with the winning run in the fifth inning at Grant (3-11).
Granada Hills 7, Reseda 4--Jessie Carranza, Adrien Torres and Mike Erwin each had two hits for host Granada Hills (8-7). Reseda dropped to 3-5.
Cleveland 10, Oak Park 0--Freshman Vince Zuniga hit a grand slam and Dan Palardy (2-0) pitched a six-hitter to pace the Cavaliers (9-5) at Cleveland.
Oak Park dropped to 8-4.
Montclair Prep 12, Culver City 2--Brad Warner (5-2) allowed three hits in five innings for Montclair Prep (8-6) at El Camino Real.
Warner had two doubles and two RBIs and teammate Andrew Miller had three hits and three RBIs.
San Fernando 4, Hacienda Heights Wilson 3--Javier Navarro tripled home Julio Sandoval with the eventual winning run in the sixth inning at San Fernando (8-6).
Quartz Hill 7, Vasquez 0--Bryan Garcia pitched the seventh inning to record his sixth save and had two hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth, to lead the Rebels (9-3) at Granada Hills High.
Birmingham 11, Littlerock 8--Alberto Flores, Hide Masawa and Frankie Gutierrez each had two hits for host Birmingham (6-7).
Simi Valley 12, Van Nuys 1--David Krewson had four hits, including a two-run triple and a two-run home run for the Pioneers (5-8-1) at Cleveland High. Van Nuys fell to 1-12.
In other tournaments:
Crespi 8, St. Paul 3--Barry Matthews had two hits and three RBIs and Brian Luderer had two hits and two RBIs for the Celts (10-4) in a pool-play game at the St. Paul tournament.
Notre Dame 11, Mayfair 5--Jorge Piedra had four hits and four RBIs for the Knights (8-6) in a pool-play game at the St. Paul tournament. Notre Dame defeated St. Paul, 11-1, earlier in the day.
Corona del Mar 6, Chaminade 5--Bruce Greenwood (1-1) hit a batter and then allowed two runs in the eighth inning as the Eagles (11-2-1) lost in a pool-play game at the Corona del Mar tournament.
Chatsworth 13, San Gorgonio 1--Danny Phillips hit his fifth home run of the tournament and had four RBIs for the Chancellors (13-4), who won their division at the Las Vegas tournament with a 4-0 record.
Andrew Silver (4-2) struck out four in five innings for Chatsworth.
Earlier, Chatsworth defeated Idaho Woodriver, 13-0.
SOFTBALL
Naples 1, Thousand Oaks 0--The Lancers (9-3) lost in the championship game of the Kissimmee tournament in Kissimmee, Fla. Naples improved to 19-0.
Thousand Oaks’ Jennifer Sharron (8-3) gave up five hits and struck out seven. Sharron was named the tournament’s outstanding pitcher.
Earlier Saturday, she tossed a two-hitter and struck out 11 in a 4-0 semifinal victory over Baron Collier (Fla.).
WOODBRIDGE TOURNAMENT
Saugus 6, Tustin 5--Jamie Gillies (12-2) struck out eight and walked three, but allowed her first three earned runs of the season for the Centurions (12-2) in pool play.
In other pool-play games:
Saugus 4, La Habra 0--Nicole Giordano and Shannon McRoy each had two hits and Amanda Melton had two RBIs for the Centurions (13-2).
Crescenta Valley 7, La Palma Kennedy 4--Leslie Linnemeyer had three hits and four RBIs and Hope Robertshaw and Becca Baldridge each had two hits for the Falcons (11-2).
Danielle Ferreira (12-2) tossed a four-hitter and struck out eight for Crescenta Valley.
Crescenta Valley 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Erica Moulden drove in the winning run with a fourth-inning double.
Danielle Ferreira (13-2) paced the Falcons (12-2) with a three-hitter and her 10th shutout of the season. She struck out 12.
Melinda Moulden had two hits for Crescenta Valley.
