Crescenta Valley Shows Top-10 Form Early, Wins, 3-2

The Crescenta Valley High baseball team, which faltered after being a preseason top-10 selection by The Times, returned to form Wednesday by beating No. 8 Glendale, 3-2, in a Pacific League game at Glendale.
The Falcons (10-6, 5-2) scored all three runs in the first inning on a leadoff single by Jesse Mitchell, three walks, a groundout and an errant rundown play.
Brian Bishop (5-0) went five innings for the victory and Billy Huddleston struck out four in two hitless innings of relief.
Phil Onsaga (6-1) suffered his first defeat for the Dynamiters (11-3, 6-2).
Kennedy 6, Granada Hills 1--Jon Garland pitched a three-hitter, striking out 10 and walking two for the Golden Cougars (19-3, 10-0) in the Northwest Valley Conference victory at Granada Hills.
Cleveland 8, San Fernando 5--Jared Mills pitched six innings of relief and drove in two runs for the host Cavaliers (13-7, 6-4) in a Northwest Valley Conference game.
Camarillo 8, Westlake 4--Nathan Kaup hit a home run and had three runs batted in for the top-ranked Scorpions (16-1, 7-0) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.
Royal 10, Newbury Park 0--Dorian Stitt had three RBIs for Royal (17-1, 6-1), and Bryant Leppard, Gabe Gapol and Matt Rainer combined for a three-hitter in a Marmonte League game at Royal.
GIRLS’ SOFTBALL
Newbury Park 1, Royal 0--Kristi Fox pitched a two-hitter, striking out 11 for the No. 1-ranked Panthers (13-1-1, 5-0-1) in a Marmonte League game.
Chaminade 3, Alemany 2--Karen Knokey scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on a throwing error, giving the Eagles (7-8, 2-1) their first victory over the Indians (10-4, 1-1) in six years.
BOYS’ TRACK
Rio Mesa 96, Ventura 72, Santa Barbara 19--Randy Hurt won the 110-meter high hurdles in 15.4 seconds and the 300 intermediates in 40.5 as Rio Mesa (9-1, 7-0) clinched the Channel League title. Four-time defending league champion Ventura (5-1, 4-1) suffered its first league loss since 1991.
