A record $140,000 in scholarships will be meted out Thursday to more than 100 Ventura County students to help further their studies.
The amount represents a 37% increase over the amount given last year, said Marti Kessler, director of the Ventura College Foundation.
“We have been more successful in our fund-raising efforts this year,” she said.
Of about 200 students who applied for the awards, about half won scholarships.
Two of the most prestigious scholarships, which are dedicated to students planning teaching careers, will go to seniors Dolores Beahm and Joanne De Bus. Both won $9,000 to be distributed over three years.
Twenty Presidential Honor Scholarships, worth $2,000 each over two years, will be awarded to students with outstanding grades and career goals.
