Witnesses at the war crimes trial of Erich Priebke, a former SS captain, said he took part in brutal beatings at the Gestapo headquarters in Rome, “the most terrifying place” in the city during Nazi occupation. Priebke, 82, is on trial in Rome’s military court on charges that he helped organize the massacre of 335 Italian men and boys at the Ardeatine Caves near Rome on March 24, 1944.
