McCarron Takes One Shot Lead

Scott McCarron took a one shot lead over Jay Williamson in the Kemper Open golf tournament at Potomac, Md., on Friday

McCarron eagled the par-five sixth hole and birdied five of his last 10 holes for a five-under-par 66 and a 132 total. Williamson shot a 31 on the front nine for the second straight day, but lost a stroke on the back nine to finish with a 67, one shot off the lead.

Gil Morgan, 49, seeking to become the oldest player to win a PGA Tour event in 21 years, equaled the best round of the tournament--65--to improve to seven under, three strokes off the lead. He’s tied with Larry Mize, who had a 67.

Isao Aoki shot an eight-under 64 for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the $1.2-million BellSouth Senior Classic at Nashville, Tenn. Dick Rhyan and Jay Sigel each shot 66. Hale Irwin, Lee Trevino and Tom Wargo were tied at 67.

Rosie Jones shot a three-under 69 for an eight-under 136 for 36 holes and moved into a three-stroke lead over of a group of four that included Patty Sheehan in the $600,000 Corning Classic at Corning, N.Y. Sheehan shot a 68 and was with Barb Mucha, Liselotte Neumann and Chris Johnson at five under.

Tennis

Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria upset the world’s No. 3 player, Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, 6-4, 7-5, in the semifinals of the Madrid Open. Maleeva will meets Jana Novotna in today’s final. Novotna advanced after Monica Seles withdrew because of a nagging shoulder injury.

Third-seeded Lindsay Davenport moved into the final of the Strasbourg Open by beating Judith Wiesner of Austria, 6-2, 6-3, in a semifinal match. In the other semifinal, Austrian Barbara Paulus beat unseeded Katarina Studenkova of Slovakia, 6-3, 6-3.

Victories by Jakob Hlasek and Marc Rosset led Switzerland to a 2-1 upset of Spain and put the Swiss into the finals of the World Team Cup for the first time. Hlasek defeated Alberto Costa, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Rosset followed up by beating Sergi Bruguera, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. In doubles, Francisco Roig and Tomas Carbonell teamed up to defeat Hlasek and Lorenzo Manta 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Track and Field

A federal judge in Phoenix extended a temporary injunction to allow heptathlete Gea Johnson to keep competing, despite accusations she used anabolic steroids. Johnson, the 1990 NCAA heptathlon champion from Arizona State, was suspended by the International Amateur Athletics Federation for use of anabolic steroids after she failed a random drug test last year. . . . Sprinter Michael Johnson has withdrawn from Sunday’s Prefontaine Classic at Eugene, Ore. because of a sore right hamstring.

Jurisprudence

Former Florida State wide receiver Randy Moss had his probation revoked by a judge in Charleston, W.Va. after he pleaded guilty to smoking marijuana while serving a work-release sentence for beating a student while he was in high school last year. Circuit Judge Charles King delayed sentencing Moss, the former West Virginia prep football and basketball player of the year, until June 6.

Ohio State freshmen basketball players Jami Bosley and Scott Gradney have been dismissed from the team after being charged in three automobile break-ins on campus.

Mighty Duck assistant coach Al Sims will have a second interview with the San Jose Sharks for their head coaching position. . . . The New Jersey Devils signed defenseman Sergei Vyshedkevich of Russia to a multiyear contract. . . . Eddie Firmani resigned as the coach of the New York-New Jersey MetroStars of Major League Soccer. Assistant coach Ralph Perez was named interim coach. . . . Kostya Tszyu of Australia retained his International Boxing Federation junior-welterweight title by stopping Corey Johnson of Detroit in the fourth round at Sydney, Australia.
